It's Pizza Time in the City

So after a disastrous week last week of no eating, two pediatrician visits and a visit to the GI, what does Eliza do yesterday? Eats pizza. Actually chewed and swallowed the pizza. five or so good size bites. It took a while, especially the last wonking piece she bit off, but she did it! She had quite the determined face while slowly chewing but eventually with only a little bit of eye watering, swallowed the pizza. There is no rhyme or reason to this feeding problem.

At the GI visit last week Eliza had actually gained some weight in the three days since she had been at the pediatrician and had lost weight. Even allowing for the 6 ounce discrepancy between the pediatrician's scale and the GI's scale she had gained weight and was either 18lbs 2ozs or 18 lbs 8 ozs, depending on whether or not you deduct the 6 ounces. I was pretty relieved and the GI said since she looks and acts healthy, is gaining some weight that he would not "poke a hole in her belly" just yet. So we go back in January and see how she is doing then.

My mother's theory is that now that she has five molars (not sure where that fifth one came from) that she will start figuring out how to chew. Could be that Nannie is on to something here. We are skipping that whole lumpy puree stage 3 foods and sticking with the smooth purees and continue trying crunchy foods and table foods and hope for no choking and gagging.

In case you are wondering where the pizza eating is in these photos, you can stop looking. There is no documentation of the event, these are just some random photos of Eliza.

  1. Lumpy food is icky.

And Eliza does have good taste: NY pizza is the best. Maybe somewhere in Brooklyn will deliver to us and our eating hopes will be realized?

Sharon has this very odd goal in life: to eat an entire, unsliced-up Mack and Manco's pizza (from Ocean City, NJ). Maybe our kids can rendevous down there and give her a run for her money.

Meanwhile, five bites is excellent and just think of all the calories!

  2. What terrific news about the pizza!
I was atually looking for a pic of YOUR face while watching Eliza eat!
Now that would have been great documentation! (hee hee)
I agree Mack and Manco's the the greatest! We took Nina there this summer, but all she did was sleep! Next summer???

  4. I have to agree, lumpy food is nasty and whoever invented the Stage 3 puree clearly has never eaten a decent meal.

As to Sharon eating an entire uncut pizza, we'll be there to witness the event!

  6. That's great news about putting off the tube and that she's eating! Now, start speaking toddler language and ask her how in the heck she did it and was okay with it, and then ask if she will telepathically communicate it to the Midwest.

  7. So I think I've got this feeding therapy thing figured out ... junk food. Eliza's diet: pizza, chicken nugget (not plural, just one nugget), cheese puffs, gold fish, duck sauce, Marino's Lemon Italian ice. Perfectly balanced diet if you ask me!

  9. Ok, between Eliza and Miss Hallie, I am beginning to think pizza is the miracle food for micropreemies!

So glad to here she found a food that she is willing to try. BTW, NY pizza is the best. Now I am jealous!!!

  10. Yay for the pizza eating, and I hope for a lot more of it in the very near future.
Even with their good eating ways, S&E don't like most stage 3 baby food either. We also skipped right past that and still do stage 2 and all types of table foods. I guess there is a consensus that lumpy is nasty.

Let us know how she does with other crunchy foods!
