"I'm Going to Coney Island"

Eliza is fascinated with the idea of Coney Island. This could be genetic since my father loved Coney Island, I could spend endless hours on the rides and neither of us could ever pass up a Nathan's Famous dog on the Boardwalk.

Today we were at the Children's Museum with one of Eliza's class mates who Eliza adores and who is just a lovely little girl. In the Dora house Eliza would call her other school friends to say that she and M were going to Coney Island to see the "ocean animals."

As they drove Benny's car, Eliza kept shouting "we're going to Coney Island!"

Friday we played some early afternoon hooky with M and her brother J and went to Victorian Gardens. It is a small Carnival that is set up on the site of Wollman Rink in Central Park. Eliza enthusiastically rode the roller coaster, the giant swing, the hot air balloon ride, the jumping frog and the airplane. Although these last three almost did me in, Eliza thought they were the best thing ever and screamed "woohoo" the entire time. The hot air balloon ride did result in some dizziness which elicited Eliza's new favorite phrase "Aye, yii, yii" (think Desi Arnaz).

As Eliza rode the "ski boat" she announced the boat was going to Coney Island (her boatmate clearly has no interest in Coney Island):

And of course the train was headed to Coney Island:

So as soon as Tio Matthew and Tia Adriana touch down in NY, we will grab Nana and Pete and head to Coney Island, where we will see Mermaids, ride a roller coaster and of course, see the Ocean Animals.

So Vamanos!

  1. So, do they only speak Spanish on Coney Island or has Dora infiltrated your house lol. Love the pics. She looks like such a little girl and not a toddler anymore.

  2. Sadly Sarah, the "ay yii yii" is something Eliza picked up from me. Apparently my childhood was filled with way too many I Love Lucy episodes.

Eliza loves Spanish and will hopefully learn lots more from my new "neic-il" (my new word for neice-in-law) Adriana. And if I play my cards right Adriana will teach her French too :)

  3. Oh, that's too funny! When I ask my son where he is going, he always says, "ummm I dunno". Good for Eliza--she's got a plan!

  5. Love all those pics! Natalie and Abby know of Coney Island because that's where the Wonder Pets saved the baby squirrel:-) And, the Statue of Liberty is famous because they saved the baby pigeon from falling of the nose...Goooo Wonder Pets!

  6. Given its proximity to Brighton Beach (my birthplace...if I recall correctly, Anne and I were both born at Maimonides Hospital on Coney Island Avenue), I'm thinking that a bit of Russian might come in handy in Coney Island. Why is it that Nick Jr. hasn't come up with a show featuring Dmitrii and Katya, anyway?

I love Nathan's hotdogs (the fries are awesome) and all of the stories my dad told me about going there in the good old days. The boardwalk was a bit decrepit by the time I was old enough to care, but Lundy's Seafood House was a favorite haunt of ours.

So, Dobre Pozhalevat' Konei Ailand! Please let Eliza know that I share her obsession with it, and that Hallie and Lea no doubt would love to join her on the roller coaster (I'll be sharing tales of the old country with some babushka over pirogi or something...)
