Violation of Child Labor Laws? I Think Not

Eliza is in a full day preschool program and, instead of going home after school, she comes to my office. After greeting John, Eliza gets into her real "work" at her easel:

This is of course exhausting, and being the compassionate employers we are, we allow her a brief nap on a fairly comfy couch:

I think some visitors to our offices are a little surprised to find a preschooler in our "employ" but most seem pretty well entertained by Eliza. And if they're not, well, they don't have to return :)

  1. Everyone should have a comfy couch for naps at work! Eliza is doing important work. Lovely couch, by the way.

  5. I took my kids to work from age 3 days to about 1 year. At that point it got too hard to keep them entertained, so I've used a combination of a babysitter, preschool, and a mom's time out program since then, but they still end up at the office once a week or so. This is the biggest benefit of being self-employed, IMHO.

  6. Was she ever the type to throw moveable objects? If so, when did this stop and how did you discourage her? I can't see my 3-year-old not totally destroying your office in, oh, about 6 minutes!

Eliza was never a big thrower of objects, unless seriously annoyed. She is a great spiller of paints, which is where the splat mat under her easel comes in handy. Eliza keeps herself pretty busy in the office painting, drawing with chalks, doing puzzles, pretend playing with her endless Littlest Pet Shop characters and such. It is easier now that she is 4 compared to when she was 3!
