Take Off ... To The Great White North!

Eliza took her first official road trip last week. In true Richter family tradition, we packed up the car with way to many snacks, talked non-stop, stopped at few too many rest stops and took the scenic route through some small towns that have seen better days ...

And we ended up in Cooperstown, just in time for a new baseball season!

Along for the trip was cousin Matthew. He and Eliza paid homage to Big Ed's memories of the glory days of Ebbets Field:

Adriana was also with us for the adventure. Adriana and Eliza took in the sights of Main Street in Cooperstown (and enjoyed wedges of deep fried macaroni and cheese):

Adriana decided it was time to really understand the game of baseball:

Eliza tried to get an autograph from Babe Ruth:

We got to visit Cuba:

And Saba (you have to look really close):

And if that wasn't enough .... we headed to ...

Still not sure? Here is another hint:

Still can't figure it out?

WooHoo! Niagara Falls! Or as Eliza calls it, the Big Water.

We faced dangerous conditions:

And windy conditions:

And we accepted the sad news that the Maid of Mist was ice bound in Lake Erie:

Some of us looked great despite the gale force winds:

We saw true love when a man showed his girlfriend the Falls on Skype:

Everyone should see the Big Water. Eliza can cross it her bucket list (assuming five year olds have bucket lists).

Oh ... and don't ask us about the whole Canada thing :)

  2. Anne,

Very nice trip! I am glad Eliza is taking tour now. Is she out of liquid food? can she eat all the snacks and regular meal like five years old? You were concerned about her eating I remember. I am proud of her.

  5. Next time you venture up North you will have to let us know, we are under an hour from the falls.
    Looks pretty chilly.

  6. As the mother of a 4-year-old with a severe feeding disorder, I doubt very mcuh that Eliza could be eating like a regular 5-year-old -- unfortunately! However, I would like to know how see is doing now too. If you have enough time and the whole topic isn't just too upseting for you, that is.

  7. Anonymous,

You are right, Eliza does not eat like a typical 5 year old. She doesn't eat like a typical two year old. She is still on a diet of mostly milk/formula and protein supplement. Things Eliza eats include: cheese (1/2 cheese stick per day), peanut butter (about a tablespoon a day), 1/8 cup of dry cereal, 1/4 of a mini bagel, 1/4 of a Julian Waffle (this is not all in the same day). If we are out she will "try" a mozzarella stick but eventually spits out the cheese. She will also eat the occasional berry or 1/4 of a banana. Eliza had been eating small PBJ sandwiches but now refuses them. I am trying cheese sandwiches to see if they work. I'll try to do a feeding post when we get back from vacation.

    How is your daughter's eating?

  8. She mostly lives on formula (in a bottle) too. She will eat very small quantities of uniform appearing solids -- nothing with much variation of color. One food cannot touch another so sandwiches, casseroles, stir fry, etc. are all out.

Yogurt, peanut butter, pudding, etc. are all "icing." And icing is the most disgusting substance in the universe according to her.

Like Eliza, she will eat the heads only of goldfish crackers (up to 4 heads a day). After that, they are "broken" and totally inedible.

Her favorite foods are spam (yes, spam) and nori. She has actually eaten 6 pieces of nori in one setting. Her best eating ever. I suspect this is because she secretly knew it had about 1/2 calorie altogether!

Prematurity... Should It Be a Classification for Special Needs Services?

It is hard to fathom that in a couple of days Eliza will be ten. I look back on the past decade and and am amazed, and often baffled, how sh...
