The R-Word

Please think twice the next time you think it is funny to use the word "retard" or "retarded" to describe someone.

You probably don't even realize how often you do it.

It is not funny.

It is not "slang."

It is demeaning to millions of people with cognitive impairments.

People like Max.

Just don't do it.

OK?

  1. Well said, I drop bad words on a regular basis but NOT any that will hurt someone. Nobody had a right to hurt someone like that word will.

  3. Elizabeth was called a retard at age two. She had her baby glasses on and was still bald. THe mother of the little girl who said it didn't acknowledge what happened.
This is a great video and I passed it on.

  4. Hi. Thank you so much for sharing my video. I only wish all those people who argue that it isn't offensive could read posts like this and hear from moms like Robin about how the word is hurled at their children.

Barb, I totally agree, I wish we could all reach more middle schoolers and teens. They are major offenders.

  5. Not too long ago a person I knew well, and respected, was using the R-word. I asked them to stop and explained why it was offensive. They "explained" that since they were using it as an "adjective" it could not be construed as offensive.

    Right.

It's OK as an adjective, but not as a noun?

    I don't think so.
