Eliza (crying): Mama I am crying.
Me: I know sweetie, but there is no reason to cry
Eliza: But Mama these are real tears
Me: Are there other kinds of tears?
Eliza: Yes Mama (still crying). There are toy tears.
Me: What are "toy tears."
Eliza: Those are the tears that come when I really really really need a new toy.
Great. Eliza has invented a whole new emotion.

Actually, this pastor sees a lot of emotional maturity in her comment! She realizes that not all hurts and needs are the same and some "needs" are more real than others. I often wish more adults understood such things! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd as a teacher, I am very impressed with her ability to use language to express exactly what she is feeling. But, oh, what a funny exchange!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a very special and smart little girl.
ReplyDeleteAnne,
ReplyDeletewhat do you think is more important "gene" or "environment"?
Eliza spent half of her "early life" outside of mommy's womb where she had to go through all kinds of environmental stress but did that effect on her brain development? She got the smart "gene" from mama while some of the babies who are born "full term", really fat and healthy with no medical issue don't know about their world.

Love it. Did you buy her a new toy for her brilliance?
ReplyDeleteEliza did manage to score herself "Sally" from Cars, but did not need "toy tears" to get it :)
ReplyDeleteHi Anne-
ReplyDeleteThis is not really related to your post (sorry!), but I am curious if you have seen any of those UFO's over Manhattan? Don't think I would ever see any as I can rarely make it outside!
